More than 37 million Americans are suffering from migraines. Give acupuncture for migraine relief and prevention a chance. I have my own method of battling these severe headaches providing patients relief from their migraines through Traditional Chinese Medicine.
What acupuncture points are used for migraine relief?
Once the patient tells me where the migraine is being felt I can choose a point selection. I prefer to to do a combination of local points and distal points. On the face and head there are three main channels that are could be effected. It could be one or all three channels that are taking part.
- Tóu Wéi: head | to unite | connection at the head
- Zàn Zhú: to accumulate | bamboo | bamboo bunch
- Tóng Zĭ Liáo: pupil | cellar hole | cleavage of the pupil
Tóu Wéi is located at the corner of the forehead. Zàn Zhú is located inner eyebrow. Tóng Zĭ Liáo is located at the outer canthus of the eye.
Distal points are added to effectively drain the channel, or pull the Qi downward from the head.
If migraine extends to the back of the neck and shoulders I opt to give the patient a back treatment first to release the muscles. Sometimes this is so effective that I do not need to do the front treatment which leaves me free to address the root cause and/or constitution of the patient.
How Does Acupuncture Prevent Migraines?
It’s important to see the pattern beneath the symptoms that are manifesting in your body. We call this treating the root cause. By treating the root and maintaining that balance with regular treatments acupuncture can help to prevent migraines. Migraine patients will usually feel that there is a trigger that happens causing the flare up. Lifestyle habits and diet are important in managing the triggers especially if the episode is stress induced. Acupuncture can help keep the patient on course in maintaining the optimal health.
