Cupping Helps With Allergies (Cedar Fever)

This is the time of year when folks are having a terrible time with allergies. Did you know that cupping can relieve allergy symptoms?

Cupping is most commonly used to relieve symptoms of the flu, colds, allergies, and coughs but can also be used for pain, poor circulation, and anxiety. We might not think of using cupping to help with allergies, but it greatly effective. Cupping with acupuncture relieves allergies symptoms of sinus congestion, headaches, and stuffy nose.

Traditional Chinese medicine is not just about needles. In my acupuncture clinic cupping is used in almost every treatment.  Cupping therapy has recently come to the attention of the public by the recent Olympics when we saw professional athletes using this therapy.   What exactly is cupping and how does it work?

Cupping therapy dates back as far as 3,000 years It is  a procedure that uses small cups and a suction method to lightly draw the skin into the cup….almost like a reverse massage. Traditionally the cups are made of glass where the  method was to use fire and alcohol with glass cups to create the suction. The flame is used to put the fire into the glass cup eliminating oxygen to create the suction.  Current methods have evolved using  plastic and silicon cups. They create the suction just as well and no flame is needed.  This is the method we use at our clinic.
