Chinese Herbal Medicine

In China, people have been using natural herbs to treat a wide variety of diseases and conditions for over 2,000 years with over 300 herbs. Individual herbs are formulated together through a complex system that has been passed down through lineages such as the Shang Han Lun. In modern times, herbal formulas increase the effectiveness of drug treatments, reduce side effects, and sometimes replace pharmaceuticals all together.

Herbs are composed of roots, bark, flowers, seeds, fruits, leaves, and branches. In one formula, there is most likely a variety of these herbal elements. The formulas are comprised from a concept of flavors: bitter, sour, astringent, sweet, salty, and pungent, which relate to the Five Element cycle (Fire, Wood, Water, Metal, and Earth). Through this method of diagnosis and prescription, a person can be prescribed one of approximately 314 Shang Han Lun formulas in addition to having it personally modified/custom made.

What Do Chinese Herbs Treat?

CHRONIC ILLNESS: Pain syndromes, gastrointestinal disorders, neurological disorders, stress related syndromes, respiratory disorders, heart problems, sexual dysfunction, allergies, and immune system deficiencies

PREVENTION: Yin and Yang tonics, prescribed to aid in the aging process by promoting optimal health and longevity, and even enhance sexual energy

EMOTIONAL WELLNESS: Stress and anxiety, depression, obsessiveness, mood swings, etc. In Chinese Medicine, emotional symptoms are thought to be due to an imbalance in the body. Herbal remedies can rectify the imbalance without creating dependence on the formula, unlike antidepressants.

POST TRAUMA: Surgery, auto accidents, falls, sports injuries, concussions, etc. “Blood-moving” herbs help to speed up the healing process, aiding the body in it’s own natural design.

Chinese Herbal Medicine can assist in allergies, autoimmune conditions, digestion, emotional health, energy & stamina, fatigue syndromes, GYN and irregular menstrual cycles, heart, circulation and blood pressure, hormonal health, immunity and immune health, joints and bones, natural pain relief, nutrition and nourishment, skin problems, and wellness support.

How Are the Herbs Prepared?

RAW

RAW
Raw herbs are decocted like a tea. Drink the decoction 2–3 times a day. You’ll get the most efficacy from herbs when they are raw. I enjoy prescribing raw herbs to be used in homemade stews—a concept referring to food as medicine.

POWDERS

POWDERS
The patient is given a specific dosage in grams. The powder is taken the same as a tea. Powders can be a patented formula, but can also be modified to create a custom formula.

TINCTURES

TINCTURES
Tinctures are patented formulas that are in liquid form with an alcohol base. They are convenient, but modifications are not possible.

PILLS

PILLS
Many formulas are made in a patented form as tea pills, capsules, or tablets for convenience. However, the efficacy is lower than in the other preparations mentioned.
